L.A. Foster Preserve
Location
L.A. Foster is near 170 Taunton Avenue (Route 140) on both sides of the street at the bridge over the Wading River. A small space for parking is available directly in front of the kiosk, accessible from the southbound side of 140 heading toward Taunton. Otherwise, street parking in an option.
Story
The LPS preserves land on both sides of the river. Proceed past the kiosk and you will find a lollipop trail that takes you along canals that once powered the copper mills that stood on this land in the early 19th century. The main reservoir remains filled year-round and hosts a large patch of yellow water lilies and passing great blue herons in the summer months. Interpretive signage will be installed before the summer so be sure to check it out! On the opposite side of the bridge you can find an open lot surrounded by pine forest and flanked by the Wading River to the south. Among the rocks in the lot are fragments of slag, reminders of the land's industrial path. Trace along the Wading River and are sure to hear a variety of songbirds and woodpeckers as you near another LPS preserve, Woodward Forest. Access between these two properties is a goal the LPS hopes to realize in the near future.
Trail Qualities
The primary trail (near the kiosk) is approximately a mile's hike on firm ground, but beware of the many exposed roots stretching across the path. On the opposite side of the bridge, the path is not regularly maintained and trek down to the lot can be treacherous due to its slope and loose composition.
