Reinhard Pasture

Location

The Lanky Reinhard Pasture is near 17 North Washington Street, right at the first bend in the road before Rte 123. Parking is limited and confined to the side of the road close to our sign, so be careful and mindful of our neighbors.

Story

Proceed down the steps past our kiosk and into the woods and look closely to observe some of the more interesting features of this land. The Reinhard Pasture is a great example of recent and quickly reclaimed forestland looks like. As you follow the trail, you will find a large patch of trees all blown down in the same direction. Over a decade ago, a burst of high speed winds caused this blowdown and long-term observation can serve as an excellent study of forest succession. As you follow the trail, close inspection of the transition from wetlands buffering the Canoe River and back to uplands showcase the diversity of species afforded by the subtle differences in riparian habitats.

Trail Qualities

The marked lollipop trail is just over a 1/2 mile and often consists of periodically soggy soil deeper into the woods, unless we are experiencing exceptionally dry climate. The steps at the trailhead are sturdy but are not paired with a railing so be careful if you typically require the added support.
